Are we to judge the nature of the cult by the nature of its founder?

Followers of some cults will dismiss things like that as persecution that somehow proves they are right. Followers of Joseph Smith want to compare him to early Christian martyrs, but Joseph Smith was shot while trying to escape from jail.
