Can i increase my RAM from 256MB to1GB, i've P4(2003),2.0ghz,40GB HDD?

whenever i browse net, sys is getting hanged and i get a warning msg saying "VIRTUAL MEMORY LOW", so i thought of increasing RAM, can anyone ist me.
