Why is punishment not a good way of reinforcing behavior?

Punishment is not always bad depending on which way we use it. Infact, through punishment and reward is how most of us grew up and learned right from wrong and even the most simple things in life. When used correctly, the punishment we receive is ociated with an unwanted behavior and through that punishment we will be less likely to act in that way ever again. If punishment is given in a form of neglect or abuse other bad habits and behaviors may occur later in life or the person on the receiving end of that punishment will be more likely to use abuse and or neglect on others. This is a good thing to keep in mind especially while parenting, you have no idea the impact of how your reinforce behavior to your children can effect that child for the rest of their live.
