MS SQL 2008 EXP remote connection to a database help!!?

Please someone help. I was given an IP address xx.xx.xx.136 to connect to a DB on a 2005 SQL server. I figured I could FTP into it, but it's not allowing me. What I am trying to do is connect via 2008 SQL express, but I can't figure how to do so to access the database. I figured I could FTP into it, but its not allowing me. After talking with the sys admin he said to use 2008 (I have no experience with) to access the database and not FTP. he told me the '.136' IP is not for FTP. I have 2008 installed and ready to use, but how do i connect to his server so that I can access the site? any help will greatly be appreciated!
