Subject verb agreement: were v. was?

i dont think you can do that.... its like saying "Pepsi were an awesome drink" meaning that Pepsi is collection of bottles of soda... or "the indian tribe were a family"... well that doesnt make sense, because tribe is used to describe a thing which happens to be a group of people, soooo we need to use was in my opinion.
